Imaginary landscapes on you dining table (and garden metabolisms): Workshops with permaculture designer and gardener Denisa Tomášková and Spanish writer, wanderer, organiser a gardener mario framis pujol*
Woods – Community for Cultivation, Theory, and Art. Meadow and forest land between the villages Písečná and Hnátnice, Orlické Mountains. Saturday 25th October 2025, 10am – 4pm. The event is free of charge. Map
Gardens and food forests are human-made (or semi-natural) environments that—despite all the gardeners’ efforts—are subject to constant and not entirely controllable processes: growth, decline, decomposition, overgrowth, reproduction, consumption, and survival.
With Denisa Tomášková, who, together with the community, designed the site based on permaculture principles, we will explore how the gardeners’ intentions have (or haven’t) been realised in this particular garden, and how challenges in permaculture practice can transform into opportunities and solutions. We will review the original design and assess on site what works, what doesn’t, and why—and what can be done about it. We will also revisit how to plant shrubs, which varieties are suitable, and how to care for them at a time when the climate doesn’t exactly make it easy for us.
After that, we’ll dive into imaginary landscapes of recipes and cultivation in a workshop led by mario framis pujol. We’ll imagine other worlds—future landscapes brought to life through a dining table full of ingredients representing the region’s food sovereignty. Together, we’ll try to design the planting of vegetable beds and an orchard layout in connection with the dishes we’d like to include in a seasonal menu. Then, we’ll cook together using local ingredients that mario framis pujol has gathered from visits to local farmers and gardens. He will also briefly introduce his practice, which he mainly develops in Spain.
The workshop will conclude with the garden metabolism of compost. Denisa Tomášková will remind us how to build a compost pile, using a new pallet composter made by mario framis pujol. We’ll also discuss soil and current issues surrounding municipal composting facilities. Denisa Tomášková is a permaculture designer and lecturer, a student of one of the founders of permaculture, Bill Mollison. She is the author and consultant of the designs of many natural and permaculture gardens and regenerative farms. She is a co-founder of the Czech Academy of Permaculture and the director of the Czech Permaculture Institute.
We’re very much looking forward to seeing you at Woods!
